How to buy a used RV
Here are some tips and advice on how to buy a used RV. It is important that you don’t buy the first RV you go and see, look around lots of dealers and see what they have to offer. After viewing lots of RV’s you’ll soon know what features you like and probably more importantly what you don’t like. Once you have a good idea of what you want it’s time to look at the local classified adverts. Even if you intend to buy from a used RV dealer it can be invaluable to look at some on offer by private sale as you will get a much better idea of prices.
When you go to look at an RV make sure you have a notebook and pen with you and note down any flaws and problems you see. These are not necessarily bad things and it does pay to be very picky when viewing as the more things you find the better your negotiating position is. If you don’t have a good knowledge of RV’s bring a friend who does. The same should apply to the mechanical aspects of the RV if you aren’t a good mechanic bring one with you.
Always ask for a test drive and ask the owner to open all the awnings and lockers check the condition of every part of the RV. Once you are happy with the condition of the RV make an offer based on what you have found. Never offer the full amount and always start low. If the owner doesn’t accept what you offer walk away but leave your details so that the owner can contact you if he changes his mind. It is usually worth phoning back in 3 or 4 weeks and asking if It is still available. If it is restate your original offer or increase it slightly.
One other good method of buying a used RV which is often over looked is to travel around the local RV parks and look for vehicles that are displaying for sale signs. Quite often you will need to contact the owner to make an appointment but occasionally you’ll be able to view it immediately. This is often the best way as you will see it in it‘s normal state and not cleaned and ready to sell. Hopefully these tips have given you a bit of knowledge about how to buy a used RV. Just remember to take your time, don’t buy the first one you see and make a low opening offer and you should do soon own an RV to be proud of.
